Definition.--By this term is meant that variety or form of the menopause which takes place more or fewer years in advance of the time when it would be expected to occur as a natural and looked for experience. It is immaterial to our present purpose whether this end is accomplished with or without the intervention of art. Great Importance of ths Subject resulting from the Development of Gynaecology.--The development of the science of gynaecology has given this feature of our subject an importance and interest which it never had before. It has opened entirely new fields for observation and discussion, and while it is true that the menopause often occurred prematurely before it came to be produced artificially and intentionally, it seems to have excited little attention, and its relations to the normal process were seldom if ever made a matter for thoughtful consideration and comment. Premature Menopause Unnatural.--The premature occurrence of the menopause is unnatural, and is therefore the evidence or the result of disease or fault. Like the Natural Process its Phenomena vary.--It may resemble the natural process in that no noteworthy incident may accompany it; again it may show all the vagaries which are encountered when the menopause comes at the time of life when it is usually looked for. Temperament and surroundings have much to do with it, just as they have with the mature process. Involvement.--The disease which will induce the early occurrence of the menopause may be constitutional or local; it may involve primarily the nervous system, the vascular system, the lungs, the kidneys, the glands, the genital apparatus collectively, or only a portion of the latter.
